Each year the KY Gay Camp is the last weekend in August or the last weekend before Labor Day. In 2008 the dates are August 22, 23, & 24, 2008.
We would like to welcome everyone to Sloydia, the site of KY Gay Camp. It's a beautiful place, the photos don't do it justice, Take a look anyway in the photo gallery in 'Visit Sloydia'. Facilities
include: scenic river with shallow swimming pool, rowboat and canoe available for boating. Many shady campsites, both for
vehicle camping and tent camping. Outhouses and well with limited water. Fully equipped weightlifting gym available on site.
There is access to nearby hot tub and hiking trails to a private mountaintop. Suggested donation is $5 per person per night,
camping is Friday and Saturday nights with more fun on Sunday. Vehicles with extremely low clearance (ground effects) or over 20 feet long not advised.
Sloydia is remote, 5 miles from TN state line in south Wayne county, Kentucky, 20 miles south of Monticello. Cell phones do NOT work
here. Cell phone coverage quits about 5 miles south of Monticello, no coverage no matter who your service is with. Please
have good directions in hand before you head out from town. Total vehicle access campsites are about 20 now, some are for tent camping near a vehicle, some have level
parking for camping in a vehicle. These upper campsites are a designated quiet zone, no stereos, please! There are about twice as many shady level sites for tent camping in the lower camping area, with vehicles parking next
door. The lower camping area is for tents only, no vehicles. There will be an area near the campsites to unload your gear, once unloaded you must move
your vehicle to the designated parking area. A cart and wheelbarrows will be available to transport your gear to your campsite.
If you wish to camp in a vehicle, let us know in advance so we can reserve a level parking spot.
If you wish to camp next to or near your vehicle there are plenty of such spots, only in the upper camping area. With late night activities in the
lower camping area, those wanting to retire early are advised to camp in the upper area. Both camping areas have an outhouse, there are a limited
number of campsites with electric available, and even a few cabins for an additional donation. For those non-campers who wish to attend,
there are motels in Monticello, 23 miles away. Things for campers to bring: Food, drinking
water (limited quantities will be available), camping gear (including cookstove), towel, flashlight, float toys, folding chairs, folding tables,
insect repellant, sunscreen, BYOB. Leave your pets at home. The owner of this private property requests that all smokers please not throw
cigarette butts on the ground. There will be one group campfire near the stage, individual campfires are a no-no. In areas away from the
access road including all of the lower camping area, camping is clothing optional. There is a well for drinking water, but it has a small flow, so a limit of 5 gallons
per person, total limit of 25 gallons an hour or the well runs dry. This is Primitive Camping! At this time there are no showers yet (maybe next year),
but the river is warm enough for bathing, we ask that only biodegradable soaps be used in the river (no shampoo, detergent or bar soap).
If you have no biodegradable soap we can provide some. Do NOT drink the water in the river! Do not trespass on the land across the river. Please be aware this is a remote and in places, rugged location. There are deep pits, steep
drop offs, uneven terrain, and sheer limestone cliffs on the property, watch your step and use a flashlight at night. This is the country, there will
be poison ivy and thorns in un-mowed areas, plus you may encounter poisonous snakes, stinging insects, or large wild animals on the property.
We urge everyone visiting to use common sense and be careful, in case of accident the nearest hospital is a 45 minute drive away.
We plan to have entertainment each of the two nights of the KY Gay Camp. The first night, Friday, is Talent night. Most of the performers from last year are returning, we are also open to new talent. The second night, Saturday, is Drag & Fantasy night, let us know if you want to perform. A keyboard will be available for keyboard players. After the show on Saturday there will be music for dancing under the stars. The stage is 27 feet wide, 20 feet deep, 6 and a half foot wide staircase leading down to the level audience area, the roof is 14 feet wide and peak is 12 feet over the deck, with 8 foot eaves. There are electric outlets at the stage and floodlights, microphones and an amplification system. There may be events scheduled for the afternoons, those will be announced. Mornings before noon are designated quiet times, no amplified music before noon please! We may have vendors for food, beverages or gifts, if you wish to be a vendor please contact us.
